The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship programme of the Government of India, launched in 2019 under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Its main objective is to ensure “Har Ghar Jal” – Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household, providing safe and adequate drinking water.

The programme follows a community-led and decentralized approach, empowering Gram Panchayats, women, and local communities to plan, implement, and manage their village water supply systems sustainably.

What is the Jal Jeevan Mission?

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship programme of the Government of India, launched in 2019 under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Its main objective is to ensure “Har Ghar Jal” – Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household, providing safe and adequate drinking water.

  • ✅ Secure long-term water availability by promoting conservation, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater recharge.

  • ✅ Build the capacity of local communities to operate, manage, and maintain water supply systems.
  • ✅ Raise awareness on water conservation, safe usage, and sanitation practices.
  • ✅ Ensure source sustainability through rainwater harvesting, greywater management, and recharge measures.
