Empowering Farmers Through Collective Strength

A Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) is a registered collective of producers—primarily small and marginal farmers—who come together to enhance their agricultural livelihoods. Through government support, FPOs enable farmers to access quality inputs, training, credit, infrastructure, processing, and direct-to-market strategies.

This approach ensures better prices for produce, reduced dependency on middlemen, and stronger community-based resilience in agriculture.

What is a Farmer Producer Organization?

An FPO is a registered body of active farmers. By aggregating small and marginal holdings, the collective achieves substantial bargaining power for input sourcing and crop selling. Supported by government frameworks, FPOs provide structured access to modern technologies, financial credit, storage solutions, and direct markets.

It shifts the status of smallholders from mere crop growers to market-shaping agri-entrepreneurs, promoting community wealth creation.

UPDASP

During the Financial Year 2025-26, Adharshila Sansthan was selected as a Cluster Based Business Organization (CBBO) under the Uttar Pradesh Diversified Agriculture Support Project (UPDASP). The programme was implemented with the objective of promoting and strengthening Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and enhancing the economic status of small and marginal farmers through collective action and market-oriented agricultural development.

Under the programme, the organization worked extensively with farming communities to mobilize farmers, facilitate the formation and registration of FPOs, and strengthen their institutional capacity. Various awareness programmes, training sessions, group meetings, exposure visits, and capacity-building activities were conducted to promote collective farming, improved agricultural practices, business planning, and market-oriented production.

Special efforts were made to develop leadership, governance, and management capabilities among FPO members and office bearers to ensure effective functioning and long-term sustainability of the producer organizations.

Special emphasis was placed on improving farmers' access to quality inputs, financial services, modern agricultural technologies, and market linkages. Farmers were encouraged to adopt improved cultivation practices, participate in aggregation and value-addition activities, and leverage collective marketing opportunities to obtain better prices for their produce. The initiative enabled farmers to reduce production costs, increase bargaining power, strengthen market access, and improve overall farm profitability.

Through this programme, the organization contributed towards sustainable agricultural development, enhanced rural livelihoods, strengthened farmer institutions, and empowered farming communities across Uttar Pradesh. The initiative has helped create a strong foundation for farmer-led enterprises and inclusive rural economic growth.

UPSS

Adharshila Sansthan was entrusted with the responsibility of promoting and forming Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) under the Central Sector Scheme for Formation and Promotion of 10,000 FPOs. The programme was implemented in designated blocks and districts of Uttar Pradesh with the objective of organizing small and marginal farmers into economically viable, farmer-owned institutions capable of improving agricultural productivity and strengthening rural livelihoods.

The organization played a key role in mobilizing farmers, facilitating membership enrollment, conducting awareness and orientation programmes, and providing continuous handholding support for the formation, registration, and operationalization of FPOs. Regular village-level meetings, stakeholder consultations, and training programmes were organized to encourage farmer participation and strengthen collective decision-making.

Capacity-building initiatives enhanced farmers’ knowledge of production planning, value addition, aggregation, post-harvest management, marketing strategies, business development, and access to government schemes, institutional credit, and other support services.

The programme aimed to strengthen collective action among farmers, improve access to quality inputs, technology, markets, and institutional finance, while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through producer-owned enterprises. By promoting farmer collectivization and entrepreneurship, the initiative contributed to higher agricultural productivity, improved farm incomes, stronger market linkages, and overall rural economic development.

Adharshila Sansthan remains committed to supporting FPOs through continuous technical assistance and capacity building, enabling them to achieve long-term sustainability and strengthen the agricultural value chain for the benefit of farming communities.
